LIMERICK is to benefit to the tune of €5 million in direct revenue as a result of its designation as European City of Sport for 2011.
This announcement was made by Shannon Development chief executive Dr Vincent Cunnane at the official launch of Limerick’s status as European City of Sport for 2011 at a packed Thomond Park.
The city is the first in Ireland to be designated as such, and Shannon Development have secured four new “high profile events” that will generate a €5 million revenue spend for the city.
Dr Cunnane said that sport is a “major economic driver for Limerick” at the launch, attended by several high-profile local sporting stars.
“Limerick is already a hub of sporting activity and has a strong calendar of sports events throughout the year,” said Dr Cunnane.
It is estimated that sports events in the Shannon Region last year generated in excess of €60 million.
