The old Newsoms store in William Street is set to get a new lease of life.
A UK-based ‘discount store’ is set to move into the unit, at 20 William Street, with deals expected to be finalised over the coming days, according to DTZ Sherry Fitzgerald.
Once one of the city’s most iconic stores, Newsom’s was forced to close some years ago due to trading difficulties.
The hardware and household items store had been in Limerick since 1850.
Since then, the unit – which is the largest in William Street – has seen two discount stores in the shape of €urodeals and the Kwik E Mart.
Now, another discount firm is to try its luck. Mr Buckley said he was unable to disclose its identity at this stage.
“An agreement is to be signed with a retailer to take over the lease next week. It is a UK-based national retailer,” Mr Buckey told the Limerick Leader. “It will be a major boost for the street, it will create a bit of employment, and bring some more life back into the city.”
The former Newsoms store would be an attractive proposition for any retailer because of the availability of car parking towards the rear.
