
In 2005 Philippe Chancel obtained a work permit which gave him the rare opportunity to travel to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) – a country that has been shrouded in secrecy for many years.
While there, he created a stunning photographic portrait of the capital city Pyongyang. Chancel conveys a picture that stems from and reflects state propaganda and image control. His cool, clinical but enormously sophisticated photographs explore how the political has been transformed into an all encompassing aesthetic.
