The Limerick Institute of Technology looks set to become the major research centre in all of Europe for marine research.
The College has just received an EU grant of €2.99m.
Working with 11 other centres from across Europe, L.I.T. as the HQ for research, will explore the potential for industry of marine culture.
Dr Daniel Walsh from Limerick IT said the research will determine the development and use of many everyday household items.
Dr Walsh said: “We’re looking at marine organisms, such as sponges and micro-algae, or macro-algae like seaweed, and even the organisms that live on these macro-algae and on sponges which can be used on cosmetic products, healthcare products, even in infant formulas and different foods.
