In a bid to attract additional visitors and enhance the reputation Limerick, Limerick.com, the portal website for the Region, today announced the launche of an ‘Limericks’ international competition. This will be held in conjunction with the Cuisle Poetry Festival in September 2005.
"People from all over the world are familiar with the Limerick Poem, but very few realise it's association with the city and county whose name it bears", says Jae Taylor promoter and webmaster for Limerick.com.
The ‘Limerick’ is a form of comic verse consisting of five anapaestic lines of which the first, second, and fifth have three metrical feet and rhyme together and the third and fourth have two metrical feet and rhyme together.
In the history of Irish literature the town of Croom, in Co. Limerick, is celebrated as the meeting place of the 18th century Fili na Maighe, the Gaelic poets of the Maigue. This was the original birth place of ‘the Limerick’. The Maigue poets, writing in their native Irish, produced a great body of poetry, and the custom was widely adopted in other locations in Limerick City and County.
"Limericks are a world wide phenomenon, from Tokyo to Sydney you will always find someone who will recite one for you. But until now the tourism potential of the famous verse, and Limerick’s connection with the verse has largely been untapped. We know that there is huge interest in the ‘Limerick’ and we are now looking at ways to harness this to bring additional visitors to Limerick City and County", said Mr. Taylor at the launch of the competition.
